When it comes to food, my number one rule is simplicity. Sure I want to eat a variety of fresh and healthy food, but I refuse to spend hours in the kitchen. And guess what? You don’t have to either. Finding snack ideas for work is simpler than you think if you use a little creativity. Let me share my six go-to healthy snacks for work.
This blog post was originally published with 5 ideas but added an additional one when updating the post a year later.
6 snack ideas for work
1) Cottage cheese and toppings
This is a lifelong favorite of mine. I have been eating cottage cheese for as long as I can remember. Cottage cheese is high and protein, packing about 28 grams in one cup. You can make a sweet or savory snack with cottage cheese as the base. Add some carbs and fibers in the form of fruits or veggies to make this a filling snack that will keep you full until the next meal. Here are some of my favorite combinations:
- Strawberries, bananas, and pumpkin seeds
- Cucumbers, avocados, and cherry tomatoes
- Cooked sweet potatoes, blueberries, and pumpkin seeds
- Hard-boiled eggs and raspberries
Some of these combos might appear strange to you. I encourage you to try them, you might just be surprised. Use your imagination, and create your own “recipes” using some of your favorite ingredients. The options are unlimited.
2) Chia pudding
Chia seeds pudding has gained in popularity over the past few years. Somewhat it is still feared by many. Perhaps it’s a texture issue for some or their boring tasteless flavor. However, if you know how to flavor your chia seeds pudding correctly, you’d likely become a fan of this trendy superfood. Two tablespoons of chia seeds provide you with almost 10 grams of fiber which is about 35%-45% of your total daily requirements.
For the best consistency, I mix 1/4 cup of chia seeds with 1 cup of milk. You can use any milk of your choice. I like to add 1 or 2 tablespoons of maple syrup to sweeten the mixture, Then, I split it into 4 containers, cover them, and put them in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. The rest of it is whatever you want, but here are some of my favorite toppings:
- Sunflower seeds butter and blueberries
- Chocolate tahini and strawberries
- Pumpkin puree, pumpkin spices, and chocolate chips
- Raspberry jam and bananas
3) Homemade trail-mix
I love this one because it is really easy to transport to work. Additionally, it doesn’t require refrigeration and once again is super versatile. Our family has peanuts and tree nuts allergies. Therefore, an off-the-shelf trail mix is usually not an option.
To make this filling snack for yourself, here are options to consider adding to your mix:
- popcorn
- seeds such as pumpkins and sunflowers
- nuts such as almonds and cashews
- peanuts
- chocolate chips
- dried fruits
- dried soybeans
- pretzels
4) Snack sandwiches
This usually surprises people, but I love small sandwiches for snacks. This is a great way to incorporate fruits and veggies into your snacks while making them filling. You can do an open-faced sandwich that you place in a Tupperware type of container, a regular-closed one, or even a wrap. Depending on what you put in it, you may not even need to refrigerate it!
First, pick a good healthy whole-grain bread. Then, let your creativity flow to invent your sandwich snack ideas for work. Here are a few of my go-tos:
- Sunflower butter and banana slices
- Cream cheese, sliced cucumber, and dill
- Mayo, tomatoes, lettuce, and basil
- Cream cheese, smoked salmon and dill
5) Rye crackers with toppings
I love the Wasa light rye crispbread. They make a fantastic base to create flavorful snacks. Once again, you can preassemble them and store them in a Tupperware type of container to bring to work. Alternatively, you can bring ingredients separately and combine them when you are ready to eat. Here are some delicious combinations to try:
- Pumpkin seeds butter and banana slices
- Cottage cheese and blueberries slightly smashed
- Cream cheese, strawberry slices, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze
- Mashed avocados, black olives, and feta cheese
6) Charcuterie inspired box
Combine all of your favorite charcuterie-style times into a go-to box. You will find this snack to be filling and interesting. The variety of flavor and texture will keep your mouth happy while the substance will fill your stomach until your next meal.
Here are my favorite items to add to my charcuterie box:
- Salami, turkey or ham slices, prosciutto, or jerky
- Grapes or strawberries
- Dried fruits
- Nuts or seeds
- Cheese cubes or slices
- Crackers and thinly sliced baguette
In conclusion…
I hope you see the extreme versatility of these snack ideas for work. There are endless combinations to create unique recipes. Use your imagination and invent your own. Not only is it fun, but you will also never get bored from eating the same dull snacks day after day.
Let me know which snack you plan to try first and share some of your unique combinations.
Bon Appetit!
