Most people around me seem sad when the nights start getting cooler, and the sun starts setting earlier. But I don’t. I would venture to say that fall is my favorite season. I love the colors, the crisp air, the approaching holiday season, and the seasonal food (yes, I’m talking to you about pumpkin spice latte). A tradition I enjoy each autumn is to transition the interior of my house into the perfect cozy home decor to make everything even better.
How to change decor simply
Changing our decor a few times a year is a fun way to celebrate the arrival of the new season. Over the years, I have collected decoration items that correspond to each season. I simply swap them a few times a year to create a perfect vibe.
I store each seasonal collection of items together in plastic bins or crates. I love these collapsible plastic crates. They are large, sturdy, and take little place when I don’t need them and collapse them. This helps me stay organized, and they are easy to get out when the time comes. I have 3 seasons I decorate for: fall, winter, and spring/summer. Additionally, I have some holiday decorations such as Halloween, Christmas, and a few Easter items.
These items were collected over the years. I love to leverage end-of-season sales. My favorite cozy home decor stores to get affordable seasonal items from are home goods, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Amazon. This is a great way to build your collection at a minimal cost, slowly, over the years.
Types of seasonal decor items
There are countless things you can play with to adjust your decor. I have found that some types of items make a huge difference for a modest cost. Here are my go-to’s.
Pillow covers
They are a great way to add a pop of color and can really transform a room. Rather than buying new pillows for each season, I simply replace the pillow covers. Not only is this cheaper, but it also takes less place to store and is a more sustainable way to enjoy a change.
We have 2 sets of fall pillow covers. We have some basic cute burnt orange ones and some with designs on them. I love them!
Entry-way rug
A few years ago we discovered Ruggable. If you have never heard of them, I encourage you to look them up. They are a machine-washable rug system that consists of a non-slip rug pad and a rug cover. They have hundreds of designs! It is a super fun way to change up the look of your entryway.
Here is our fall rug that creates a cozy and festive vibe.
Flower arrangements
I love adding a few fake plants to the decor. In the fall, I have this cute metal canister with colorful fall leaves.
Additionally, I add a fall leaves garland to the mantel of our fireplace. I find that this sets the tone for fall as you walk into our house.
Lastly, every season I decorate our front porch with seasonal fake plants in a large beautiful white planter I purchased from Amazon a while ago. This planter is very heavy and just looks gorgeous.
Adding flower arrangements to our decor brightens the area we place them in and adds to our cozy home decor.
Placemats
We use woven vinyl placements. I love that they are easy to clean and last a long time. Because they are unlimited color options, they are another item I like to switch to every season. In the fall, you probably guessed it, we like to go with these beautiful orange placements that we bought on Amazon.
Other fall cozy home decor
Like many, we love to add pumpkin decoration items during the fall season.
A few years ago, we also added some really cute owls to our fall decor collection.
A nice cozy blanket is also always a must in my opinion for both spring and summer. Once again, we continue with our orange accent with this throw I purchased from Amazon a couple of years ago. It is a super soft light blanket that adds the perfect touch to our living room.
Natural colors and materials also are a great addition to fall decor. We enjoy these decorative natural balls that we place in a pretty bowl as a centerpiece.
One of our latest addition which is also a favorite of mine is this “grateful” sign. I love to see this sign in our decor from early fall through Thanksgiving.
Tips for seasonal decor
- Avoid overcrowding your space. It’s important to not just add fall items to your decor but rather rotate them. This way, your home doesn’t appear cluttered and the seasonal objects are more noticeable.
- Store the items together so the seasonal transition is easy.
- Take your time. Don’t go on a giant shopping spree to purchase a full seasonal decor. Enjoy adding a few items every year or from time to time. I also like adding new pieces when we go on vacation. It makes for great souvenirs.
In conclusion..
I hope this article gave you ideas on how you can create a cozy home decor in the fall while you watch the leaves change colors.
I would love to see what are some of your favorite fall decor items.
