Keeping your home clean all year long can seem like a impossible task. It’s easy to let the to-dos accumulate and suddenly face an overwhelming amount of work. I like to break the large cleaning tasks evenly throughout the year to keep things more manageable. I keep this basic house chores list, which is organized by month, in my planner to help me stay on top of the cleaning. In this article, I’ll share my technique with you in the hope that you will find it helpful.

House chores list

Carpet

If your home has carpet, I would suggest investing in a carpet cleaner machine. So much dirt accumulates in carpets just through normal activities such as dust in your home, dropping food and drinks, hair, fur, etc. Additionally, if you walk on your carpet with shoes you wear outside of your house, you bring a whole other set of germs in. Getting your carpet cleaned professionally is great but also expensive. Investing in a good carpet will do the work just fine, especially if you keep up with the task regularly.

Although I am not a carpet cleaner expert, I feel comfortable recommending the Bissell carpet cleaners. We purchased ours about 15 years ago, and it still works perfectly.

Refrigerator

Keeping up with a clean and organized fridge is a talent. However, the more we make it a priority, the easier it gets. I like to clean our refrigerator monthly. It helps limit food waste, reduce odors, and keep my grocery budget on track.

Pantry

Similarly to the fridge, the pantry can get out of control fast. The only saving grace is that the food is non-perishable. However, even non-perishable food expires. Without a good and consistent system, we tend to lose control of the pantry and ultimately waste food.

Freezer

I love the commercial where they compare the freezer to a time capsule. This is so true! Who knows what sits in the back of the freezer? For this reason, I spend energy a few times a year cleaning out the freezer. It allows me to assess what is in there that needs to be used up soon to limit the amount of food waste.

Ceiling fans

Have you ever stopped your ceiling fan and noticed a thick layer of dust on each blade? Don’t let it get this way. Add the ceiling fans to your rotation a few times per year. This will also help your entire house be less dusty.

Curtains and blinds

That’s right! Your blinds and curtains also accumulate dust too. They don’t necessarily need to be heavily cleaned, but a good dusting for the blind and a sanitizing cycle in the dryer for your curtains is a must a few times each year.

Pillow covers and comforters

I tend to forget when is the last time that I cleaned my comforter. Therefore, including it on a schedule gives me peace of mind that it won’t get forgotten.

Windows

Having beautiful clean windows provides important curb appeal for your home. While it can be time-consuming to clean your windows, it is worth it.

Oven

Whether you have a self-cleaning oven or one you need to clean manually, this is an important task to keep on your schedule. A clean oven is more appetizing to make food in, and is safer by reducing the risk of an oven fire.

Fireplace

Regardless if you have a wood-burning or gas fireplace, you should be cleaning them yearly. The process is quite different for each. We have a gas fireplace, and the maintenance is pretty minimal. Regardless, I like to complete this just before we turn it on in the fall.
