I started to use essential oils about four years ago. At first, it can be pretty intimidating and overwhelming. There are so many of them, so many brands and conflicted information is circulating. I had no idea how to use them. In this article, I will share how to use essential oils without a diffuser to help you get started.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated extracts derived from plants, fruits, flowers, or seeds. They have chemical properties that can be beneficial to people. However, because of their concentration, they should be used with care.
The popularity of essential oils has grown rapidly in the past several years. The global market is estimated to be greater than USD 21B in 2022. Experts predict the growth to continue in the foreseeable future.
So, what exactly are their benefits, and how to use essential oils without a diffuser?
What are essential oils benefits?
Essential oils have many potential benefits.
However, it is important to understand that they are not regulated by any government agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States. This means that any claims made by essential oil companies are unproven. You should use your judgment and do your own research.
Essential oils are way more than pleasant smells. Here are some of the possible benefits:
- Improved mood and sense of happiness
- Lower anxiety, stress, and depression
- Improve sleep and reduce insomnia
- Promote relaxation
- Increase focus
- Relieve headaches
- Reduce nausea and help with digestion
- Reduce inflammation
- Reduce menstrual discomfort
How to use essential oils without a diffuser
Diffusing is a fantastic method to create an amazing scent in your home and enjoy the benefits of essential oils aromatically. However, it’s not for everyone. Unfortunately, our tiny 9 pounds dog does not tolerate diffusion. He will typically throw up, it doesn’t seem to matter much which oil we are diffusing.
Although I will diffuse in my office or other rooms he is not in, I’ve learned there are so many other ways to use oils.
1- Make cleaning products with essential oils
I started making my own cleaning products a few years ago. This is a fantastic way to use essential oils. You can create lots of different scents and leverage the strong antibacterial properties of some oils.
My favorite oils to add to cleaning products are tea tree, peppermint, lemon, orange, and rosemary.

2- Use essential oils in your skincare routine
Some essential oils have powerful properties to help you have and keep fabulous skin. Many essential oils are used in high-end beauty products today.
You can buy 100% pure essential oil and dilute them with a carrier oil to apply to your body and face. I also like adding a few drops of oils with my unscented body moisturizer. Each day, I can “wear” a new scent based on my mood.
My favorite skincare oils are rose, frankincense, lavender, orange, copaiba, and ylang-ylang.
Pro tip: citrus oils can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Therefore, you should be mindful of sun exposure if you are using it in your skincare routine.
3- Make your own room spray
Although diffusing the oil provides longer-lasting effects, there are other options to give your home a pleasant scent.
You can make your own room sprays or fabric sprays. I like to use small 4 oz glass bottles. Add 20-30 drops of essential oils and fill the rest with water or witch hazel.
Pro tip: Using witch hazel helps the oils and water to combine and will make the scent linger longer.
You can also simply add a few drops of essential oils on a piece of paper towel and place it in a room or near an air vent or fan.
4- Replace your drier sheet
You can purchase wool drier balls and use essential oils to give your laundry a fresh and pleasant scent.
My favorite oils to use for this are lavender and lemongrass.
5- Use essential oils in salt bath or shower
Keep a glass jar of Epsom salt in your bathroom and turn any empty oil bottles upside them to drain in the salt. You will always have nice bath salt to use.
You can also put a few drops of oil on the shower floor before starting your shower. My favorite one is eucalyptus oil. It will make you feel like you are at a spa.
6- Apply to skin for a soothing and healing effect
Essential oils are powerful and can promote healing for conditions such as acne, wounds, or rashes.
Always dilute essential oil before applying it to the skin and make sure the oil is safe to be used topically.
I love using lavender oil for itchy skin and tea tree oil for acne or scratches.
Do your own research before using essential oils (even diluted) on children or pets.
Essential oils safety
Essential oils are a great alternative to replace other more toxic products in your life.
They are safe if used responsibly. Take the time to learn and understand how to use different essential oils. Research what they are safe to use for and how to use them.
The quality of essential oils in the market varies wildly. You should do your own research before selecting the brand of oils you want to purchase.
Look for oils that are sold in dark glass bottles and are made of 100% pure essential oils. You will be surprised how many oil companies only use a small percentage of actual essential oils.
In conclusion
Essential oils can do a lot to enhance your life. I hope that this article gave you new ideas about how to use essential oils without a diffuser.
I’d love to hear how you use your essential oils.
Thanks for reading.
