Have you ever found yourself admiring someone with beautiful and glowing skin? Did you know many of your actions directly impact your skin’s health? That’s right! Although genetics play a role, decisions you make daily can make a huge difference. This article is about steps by age group you can incorporate into your skincare routine at home. They are simple yet effective and will make a difference in how your skin looks and feel.
Skincare routine at home by age group
From teenage years to the 20s
Starting from childhood, it is important to teach children proper skincare. It should start from when they are still babies by applying sunscreen to them every time they go outside in the sun. It also involves explaining the importance of keeping their skin clean. The last foundational element to healthy skin is good hydration. Contrary to popular belief, drinking water does little if nothing at all to help your skin stay hydrated. Moisturizing your skin is the only proven method to keep your skin hydrated.
As children enter puberty, their perfect clear skin will often change. The changes can range from having more oily skin to suffering from severe acne. Focusing on a few basic steps will help them learn how to care for their skin for the rest of their life. Here is a simple 3 step process every teen should know:
- Every morning, rinse your face with cool water, pat dry, and apply a thin layer of face moisturizer with SPF protection.
- Every evening, wash your face with warm water and face wash, pat dry, and apply a thin layer of moisturizer. You don’t need a moisturizer with SPF for the nighttime, and therefore, I recommend buying a separate one from your daytime moisturizer.
Amazon has many great options. One of the best-reviewed for teenagers is by CeraVe. They offer everything from face wash, day moisturizer, and night moisturizer.
As teens transition into early adulthood, not much is required in terms of changes to the skincare routine. Consistent use of good skincare products daily is key to keeping the skin looking young and healthy for as long as possible.
The 30s and 40s
As we progress in life, one thing is for sure. Our skin, just like any other part of our body is aging. While it might be difficult to see that our internal organs are changing, it is pretty evident with the skin. Genetics plays an important role, but so does how you choose to care for your skin from a young age. In addition to wearing sunscreen, cleaning your skin, and keeping it moisturized, here are tips dermatologists recommend you to follow:
- Don’t smoke
- Eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables
- Limit your alcohol consumption
- Exercise several days each week to promote good blood circulation
In addition to the clean, dry, and moisturize steps, I recommended the following adjustments to your skincare routine:
- Exfoliate your skin once a day: the skin is made of multiple layers. The outer layer sheds dead skin particles about every month for young people. However, as you get older, this process can take almost twice as long. Exfoliating your skin will help give it a smoother and softer look.
- Incorporate a firming serum in your skin regimen morning and night. Serums are amazing to provide your skin with added minerals and vitamins. It will help your skin glow and restore some damages that previously occurred.
- Add a skin tightening cream for your neck. Unfortunately, the skin on the neck of a woman is often a telling sign of her age despite how beautiful the skin on her face. Find a good neck tightening cream and start using in at night in your 30s.
- Last but not least, incorporate essential oils. The number of benefits essential oils provide is countless. Your specific skin goals will determine which oil is best for you. I like to alternate the oils I use on my face. My favorites are:
- Frankincense
- Rose
- Lavender
My personal favorite skincare products
I have used many skincare products in my life and, I will probably use many more in the future. However, I wanted to share my current favorites. I am in my 40s, and my skin is by no means perfect. However, most would say I have a good complexion, and generally healthy-looking skin for my age. I do have a few fine lines by my eyes, an age spot or two on my face, and several small ones on my hands. I also have the not-so-pleasant looser skin on my neck. However, I am thankful for it. I am thankful that I get to grow old and experience this while so many don’t get to.
Here are the products I used in my skincare routine at home:
Moisturizer: I use the Fre product lines for most of my skincare at the moment. I have both their tinted and non-tinted moisturizer with SPF30. At night, I use their nourishing night cream. All their moisturizers feel great on the skin. My skin is rarely dry but also does not feel oily.
Cleanser: My go-to every evening is the Fre foaming micellar cleanser. This light foam has a light and pleasant scent and leaves my skin feeling clean but never dry. If you use heavy makeup, however, you might need to use a cleaning oil before using the cleanser.
Exfoliant: Every night, I use the Fre hydrating facial cleanser which offers a light exfoliation. If you need or want something a little stronger, I have used the Arbonne brighten up skin exfoliator. I have used many Arbonne products before and am sure will do so again in the future.
Serum: Once again, my go-to is the Fre firming serum. I chose to use it once a day, at night. In the morning, I have lately opted for their vitamin C serum. This is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect and prevent damage to the skin. I’ve only used it for a few months, but I love it.
Skin tightening cream: I have tried a few different ones but keep coming back to this one. My number 1 choice is by far the Dr. Brandt needles no more® Neck Sculpting Cream. This cream is the real deal. When using it consistently, I see very clear and obvious results. It isn’t cheap but works!
In conclusion…
Aging is a privilege and I truly believe this. I have seen too many friends and acquaintances leave us too early. However, it doesn’t mean that we cannot want to protect our skin and keep it looking young and healthy while we age gracefully.
