Spring is all about new beginnings and transformations. It’s no surprise many will join the spring cleaning movement. However, the task can seem unsurmountable and overwhelming. In this article, I will share six helpful spring cleaning tips to make this task more manageable.
Spring cleaning tips
1. Spread it out
Do not try to get everything on your spring cleaning checklist done on the same day or even on the same weekend. Spread the tasks out. Spring lasts three months, and there is nothing wrong with using the length of the season to get your entire to-do list crossed off.
I like to spread all of my cleaning chores evenly throughout the year, including spring cleaning. Feel free to check out this article to see my yearly chore calendar and understand my method.
2. Create a checklist
To be successful, you need to know what success looks like to you. Therefore, before you start, write down everything you wish to accomplish. Your spring cleaning checklist is unique and will be based on your living situation. Here are some elements to consider adding to your cleaning checklist.
- Windows
- Refrigerator/Freezer
- Oven
- Blinds
- Curtains
- Ceiling fans
- Baseboards
- Light fixtures
- Carpet/Rug
- Pillows/Cushions
- Pantry
- Outdoor Grill
- Porch
- Fireplace
- Cabinets
- Garage
3. Make a plan
It’s time to create a plan now that you have your spring cleaning checklist. Use a calendar (either paper or virtual) and add all currently planned non-cleaning-related activities. These can be work-related, appointments, social activities, sporting events, etc.
Once this is done, you can start inserting cleaning blocks into your calendar. Estimate each chore on your checklist and fill in your calendar. Remember the first of our spring cleaning tips; Spring lasts three months, so there is no need to rush.

4. Take it outside
Spring is the beginning of the outdoor season. Most households have chores to accomplish outside. Alternating between indoor and outdoor chores breaks the monotony. Spending time outdoors is also energizing and good for the soul.
Here are some things to consider including on your outdoor to-do list: garage, car, grill, front and back porch, outdoor lights, etc.
5. Rotate your decor
Let’s be honest; finding the motivation to clean can be difficult. Unless your home is filthy, the results are not always obvious.
Something I’ve incorporated into my cleaning routine in recent years is doing a seasonal decor change. I have a couple of crates for each season with items I swap for a fresh new look. Here are examples of things that we rotate to create a new seasonal look.
- Decorative pillow covers
- Blankets
- Rotate pictures in picture frames
- Small decorative object
- Artificial plants/flowers
- Word signs
- Rugs
- Curtains
6. Adjust your cleaning products
I find it fun to adjust our cleaning products throughout the year. Because I make my own, it is quite easy to add a seasonal scent by changing which essential oils I use. Our house has a fresh, unique, and seasonal scent. I find that it also adds to my joy and motivation to clean.
- Spring: flower scents (ylang-ylang, geranium, or lavender)
- Summer: citrus scents (orange, lime, or lemon)
- Fall: spicy scents (clove, cinnamon, or ginger)
- Winter: cold scents (peppermint, rosemary, spearmint, or juniper berry)
